What is a token burn?
A burn takes tokens out of circulation by sending them to an address nobody is known to control, such as the common "dead" address 0x000...dEaD or the zero address. The tokens still show up in the explorer, sitting at that address, but they cannot be moved by an owner.
What a burn does not tell you
- It does not guarantee a price or market-cap change. Price depends on demand, liquidity and many other things.
- A balance at a burn address does not certify every burn. Tokens can be sent to other addresses that also look unspendable, and those will not appear in a tracked total.
- Dollar values for burns are estimates: tokens burned times a market price, not money that moved.
What "tracked" means here
The Burn Showdown counts transfers to a short, listed set of addresses. On Base: Base 0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD and the zero address. On Ethereum: Ethereum 0xdEAD000000000000000042069420694206942069 , Ethereum 0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD and the zero address. Anything else is not counted.
Check supply claims
The original supply is visible in the token's first mint transaction. For SHIB on Base: mint transaction (1,000,000,000,000,000 SHIB). For SHIB on Ethereum: mint transaction (same amount). Third-party "circulating supply" numbers can disagree with on-chain data; when they do we say so instead of forecasting.
